Australian Wedding Wedding and Traditions

Australian weddings are social events that usually bring many people together for a fun time and a cheerful event, the starting of a new couple’s life together. Traditional Australian foods that could be served at your traditional Australian wedding are fish and chips (chips are french fries) or ‘Aussie’ burgers with Canadian bacon(peameal bacon), pineapple, onion, fried egg and beets. A tip for making the fries taste better, use chicken salt, a traditional Australian ingredient. Vegemite is also a traditional Australian delicacy, a brownish paste made from yeast extract, which can be added to fancy crackers or even toast. Make a fruit salad from paw paw, rock melon, pineapple, passionfruit and banana, serve macadamia nut pie and pavalova.

Below is a recipe for pavalova, a traditional Australian dessert.

  • 4 egg whites
  • 1 tsp vanilla essence (5 ml)
  • 2 tsps vinegar
  • 1 cup sugar

Instructions

  • Preheatoven to 150 oC (300 oF)
  • Grease oven tray
  • Beat the egg whitesuntil very stiff
  • Fold in vinegar and vanilla
  • Add sugar, and beat until smooth
  • Pile the mix onto oven tray about the size of a medium cake.
  • Place pavlova in oven, and immediately reduce temperature to 100 oC
  • Cook for 90 minutes
  • If cooked correctly (as all ovens vary), the pavalova should be crunchy on the outside, and like marshmallow on the inside. Do not open the oven at all while cooking!!!!

To serve:

Arrange sliced kiwifruit or any other fresh fruit you like, on top of whipped cream (250ml of full cream per pavlova), with icing sugar being added to the cream during whipping to one’s own taste (I put about 1/2 cup in). This will make for a yummy traditional dish for you and your guests to enjoy!

For your drink list, consider Australian-made wines and liqueurs, or imported beer from Australia. As for flowers, there are many exotic varieties to choose from to be used to decorate your wedding venue. Some of these varieties include banksias, wattle & bottle brush & warratah, which are all native flowers, and eucalyptus. Orchids are commonly used in Australia for wedding decoration. A fun way to enhance your traditional Australian wedding experience would be to use gumnuts for table decorations they are very versatile and come in all shapes and sizes – they can be used to decorate candles and placecards. ‘Il still call Australia Home’, ‘Waltzing Matilda’ and ‘Home Among the Gum Trees’ are Australian songs that would normally be played at an Australian wedding reception. Have your guests make merry all night long to these wonderful classics.
